The Kingdom of Polystyrene Posted by condour at 06:02 AM April 29, 2004

Dow wants you to know that their Styrofoam™ is is a global success, and moreover that it isn't what birds are choking on. Meanwhile, The Polystyrene Packaging Council wants you to know, among other things, that "Modern man has known about styrene for centuries" and that "Wherever you live, wherever you work, chemicals are a vital part of your life."

dowagers Posted by condour at 04:35 AM April 23, 2004

Apparently wealthy dowager is redundant:

Pronunciation: 'dau-i-j&r

Function: noun

Etymology: Middle French douagiere, from douage dower, from douer to endow, from Latin dotare, from dot-, dos gift, dower -- more at DATE

1 : a widow holding property or a title from her deceased husband

2 : a dignified elderly woman

Take that, Margaret Dumont!

Lehrer blogs Posted by condour at 12:54 AM April 20, 2004

Brian Lehrer of wnyc.org is blogging. Or at least his show is. So far the emphasis seems to be on national politics -- I hope they get into some local stuff though, because on the internet, there's plenty of political bloggery, and a near complete lack of cranky New Yorkers complaining about dog runs and the school commission.

Has Amazon created a Google-killer? Their new site spread through the blogosphere without going through the standard PR channels. It seems to work fine, and the idea of being able to search the text of books is phenomenal. I'm gonna give it a week and see how it feels.
