?? More Democratic Popery | Main | The Wind Beneath My Wingman ??
I felt bad for Lawrence Lessig at last night's Creative Commons benefit. A man who has argued in front of the Supreme Court can be booed by New Wave fans? I guess that's in the spirit, somehow, of democratizing intellectual property.
At any rate, the flash explanations of Creative Commons were well recieved. Chris Anderson (Wired editor) was not a particularly impressive public speaker, unfortunately -- I felt as though he was picturing the audience in their underwear, but got confused by the contrasting Byrne fan underoos and Gil fan thongs.
The actual performances were fantastic. Gil covered Lennon's "Imagine" and Veloso's "Soy Loco Por Ti America", and Byrne opened with "I Zimbra." The two joined forces to form a musical Voltron at the end of the show, covering Roy Rogers' "Don't Fence Me In" in a South American idiom. Butch and Sundance would be proud.
During intermission, they projected Byrne's powerpoint art. And I got this boss temporary tattoo, which was free and somehow applied perfectly. Neeru Paharia of Creative Commons got a snapshot of the application, but since I muffed up the "say cheese" part, it may never show up on their blog. Of course I didn't read the fine print: until it wears off, I can be shared freely, as long as attribution is given. Hoo-hah!

does that mean we could download that and, like, remove your eyebrows or replace your head? as long as it's art?
It doesn't even have to be art. It could be crass pabulum. But please be gentle.
