Hybrid Vigor

You know how in cartoons the big male dog always wants a piece of the cute female poodle? Well, this is what you get. But if you start just breeding all dogs together, the result looks a little more like this, generic Canis familiaris. Hybrid vigor, or heterosis, is said to be the reason that mutts are often more healthy. While it's true that crossbreeding can reduce the likelihood of recessive traits showing up, it's probably a bit bunk as a general theory, since the desired traits of each breed are just as likely to disappear. However, that hasn't stopped some anthropologists from theorizing that heterosis may be responsible for the 20th century rise in IQ.
And hats off to Sandra for writing a Modern Love column.
All's fair in love and war, so if WWII can be done in l33t, it stands to reason that dating can be done in SMS.
An open apology to Goldie Hawn
Goldie,
Sorry I took your picture with my cellphone camera at CompUSA today. You were right, it was cruel. I was temporarily starstruck, and I thought Carrie would get a kick out of it, but she said the same thing. Plus it wasn't very New Yorkerly of me.
Your casual fan,

Big Man on Buddy List
Aimfight reads your position in the social network of AIM buddies, and compares you to an opponent. Compares you in terms of how many high-rated buddies you have. Play now before people starts whoring out their lists, thereby ruining it for everyone.
Time is money: Don't read the whole book.
Folded Space has condensed a series of financial advise books into short summary form. Since the books are mostly fluff, it leaves a lean, mean series of tips on how to keep the repo men at arms length. Of course, most of it is common sense... but it's the sort of common sense that we too frequently ignore in exchange for something shiny or deep fried. Via Boing.
Happy Moon Day!
Google celebrates the anniversary of the first moon landing with Google moon, an extraterrestrial extension of their Google maps.
Little Scarface has a posse
So we ran into this image in Athens, and my brother loves it enough to make a t-shirt. But what the hell is it? I asked metafilter, and they turned me on to a helluva stenciling community. The developing theory is that it's not banksy, not borf (it predates his recent trip to europe), but is probably someone of that ilk, and has appeared a few times. MeFites suggest the best place to find the artist is on the Wooster Collective, a helluva good browse even if no answers are forthcoming. And as for the t-shirt, it's already been done.
Truth in advertising
I always thought sex and real estate were opposites, or at least that thinking about the latter could be used to forestall an early conclusion to the former. But, sex sells, I suppose.
Back on duty
Greece. Wow, man. We had a great trip, and here's the pics to prove it. Yep, I'm using Flickr now. I put a bunch of other photos up there too, spanning from 1998 to present. Enjoy!
