National Review lists its favorite conservative movies. I love some of these (It's a Wonderful Life, Shane), and I understand most of the choices. But Ghostbusters? What the fuck?
One of the most interesting choices on the list, as far as I'm concerned, is High Noon. You can see their point: Law and order sheriff, everyone around him cowers but he stands up to the bandits. A fairy tale of George W. Bush's universe, right?
But it was written blacklisted McCarthy victim, Carl Foreman. At the time of its release, it was seen as an allegory of McCarthyism. The sheriff is called out by the gang. He seeks allies and community support, but finds that everyone is hiding at home, paralyzed by fear.
Which just goes to show, we all have the same values, more or less. We just argue about the specifics.

One thing that comes to mind from Ghostbusters -- and I can't believe I remember this -- is that the Environmental Protection Agency almost destroys New York when an EPA inspector forces the Ghostbusters to shut down their ghost holding tank. Perhaps the anti-EPA bend resonates with conservatives?
They like the tragedy, don't they... Dumbo? Could they have picked a sadder Disney cartoon?
Spot on Greg... I forgot about that part. And Kate, in Dumbo let's not forget those minstrel crows. They must get huge guffaws at Trent Lott's house.
